SPEEDY J
• South, Central & North America
Since his first record as Speedy J landed on Plus 8 in 1990, Jochem Paap's curiosity and productivity has enshrined his status as a true techno pioneer. His work takes on many dimensions in the present day, managing the many strands of his innovative STOOR platform and still pursuing a creative practice that yields fiercely original, inventive electronic music.
Paap's long and winding career has plenty of storied touchstones – seminal electronica LPs on Warp Records ’Artificial Intelligence series and Planet Mu, ambient epics on FAX +49-69/450464 Records, and a relentless wave of razor-sharp club 12”s across most of the iconic techno labels you’d care to think of. His career is littered with high-profile collaborations all recently revived and archived on his personal Bandcamp profile — Slag Boom Van Loon with Mike Paradinas (µ-Ziq), Multiples with Surgeon and Metalism with Chris Liebing amongst many others.
After opening his STOOR studio facility underground in the heart of Rotterdam around 2016, Paap developed a circular culture of sonic experimentation and presentation. Surrounded by his decades-deep collection of outboard gear, countless hours of solo and collaborative sessions have yielded captivating results. Some have been streamed to the world in pioneering remote live jams during the pandemic, while others have been cut directly to record on the in-house lathe. Bolstered by a constant presence of sympathetic visual artists, the STOOR lab has been the launchpad for STOOR Live, where Paap orchestrates long-form improvised live sessions with some of the biggest names in electronic music worldwide, in a high-stakes, thrillingly unpredictable spectacle.
These endeavours keep Paap acutely plugged in to the present and future of techno. His inquisitive approach to his craft continues to yield new ideas, even if that means looking backwards to contemplate the role of the artist album in the streaming era. 2026's Walkman — his first solo LP in 20 years — takes inspiration from the spirit of the mixtape to create a soundtrack suited to being in motion. It's a natural state for Speedy J — an artist who has never once stood still.
